We visited December 2025
We first went to Kai Beach Club on Christmas Eve thinking we'd stay for a couple of hours between surf sessions.
We left at sunset after spending basically the entire day there, then went back again on New Year's Eve because all three of us kept talking about it afterwards.
For somewhere that's free to get into, it honestly ended up being one of our favourite places in Weligama.
The main thing here is the pool. It's huge. Not one of those tiny decorative hotel pools where everyone is awkwardly floating around trying not to kick each other in the face.
There was actual space.
Jax spent most of the day launching himself off this ledge into the deeper section while Oli joined in. Within about ten minutes Jax had joined a group of other kids doing jumping competitions and making up games together.
We barely saw him unless he was hungry.

There was loads of room for playing ball games too, which sounds small but genuinely makes a difference when you're travelling with kids. Half the time pools end up being full of adults trying to relax quietly while children slowly get told off for existing.
This wasn't like that at all.
It had a really easy atmosphere to it. Loud enough that nobody cared about splashing or jumping in, but not chaotic in a stressful way.
And the music helped. The DJ was playing old school hip hop most of the afternoon and we absolutely loved it. At one point Jax was throwing himself into the pool while "Still D.R.E." was playing in the background, which felt like quite a specific Christmas Eve memory.

One of the best things about Kai Beach Club is how easy it is to move between the pool and the beach.
You're not stuck choosing one thing for the day.
On Christmas Eve, Jax went from the pool straight into a surf lesson, then came back dripping wet and immediately jumped back into the pool again like he'd somehow not already been in water for six straight hours.
That setup worked perfectly for us because Weligama can get really hot in the middle of the day, especially if you're spending hours on the beach. Having somewhere with shade, cold drinks, proper seating, and a pool a few steps away made the whole day feel much easier.
We noticed loads of families doing the same thing. Kids bouncing between surfing and swimming while parents tried to recover slightly in the shade.
The beach itself obviously gets busy, especially around sunset, but the club somehow still felt more relaxed than most of the beachfront spots nearby. Probably because people spread out between the pool, restaurant areas, loungers, and beach.
This was the other thing we really liked.
There are several different food places around the pool area, but you order everything from one menu. So instead of everybody having to agree on one restaurant, one person can get burgers, someone else can order Sri Lankan food, somebody else can get pizza.
As a family, this removes an unbelievable amount of pointless discussion.
Especially after a full beach day when everyone's hungry and slightly sunburnt and suddenly incapable of making simple decisions.
The food itself was good too. Not life-changing, just solid beach club food that actually arrived fairly quickly despite the place being busy.
Jax only really stopped swimming long enough to eat.

Entry to Kai Beach Club and the pool is free, which still surprised us a bit considering how nice it is.
There is supposed to be a minimum spend if you want the better seating areas. From what we saw, it was 2,500 rupees per person for the poolside tables, and 5,000 rupees for the beach loungers and VIP section.
But honestly, we never once saw anyone checking any of this.
Maybe they do at busier times. Maybe everyone else was actually tracking their spending properly while we weren't paying attention. Hard to say.
Either way, we never felt pressured while we were there, which made a big difference compared to some beach clubs that immediately feel transactional the second you walk in.
And because entry is free, it didn't feel stressful staying for ages. We weren't doing constant mental maths trying to justify the cost of being there. We could just settle in for the afternoon and let Jax disappear between the pool and beach.
We ended up spending plenty anyway because we stayed so long both times.
That's probably the clever part.
